Design

The design of Sony Cybershot DSC W710 Point and Shoot digital camera is different from other cameras in this price range. It is slimmer than any other camera at this price point. Metallic frame over the edges gives it richer look. Navigation controls of the camera are very user friendly. There is thumb-rest at the back side of the camera. 2.7 inch (6.85 cm) display sits at the real panel of the camera which has 230k dot resolution. Being, the lesser DPI display, you can’t judge the image quality on it. There is toggle switch which is at right side of the real panel to switch between image, panorama and video mode.

Performance

Unlike, other cameras at this price point which have a normal CCD sensor, Sony Cybershot DSC W710 has an edge over them with its Super HAD CCD sensor using which more amount of light is passed on to the sensor and you get better picture quality in low light.

Coming to its zoom capability, it has 5x optical zoom which is normal as compared to other cameras in this price range. This camera has maximum aperture of f/3.2 at wide-angle lens which falls to f/6.5 by tele-photo position, which results in camera to wait for enough amount of light to pass on to the sensor. In this process, it takes almost 0.25 seconds and results in blurred images. The only way to get blur-free images is to raise the ISO levels, but unfortunately with this you get noisy pictures as it does not have mechanical/optical image stabilization feature.

This camera also have 360-degree panorama mode. But, you’ve to be very very stable while capturing panorama and if there is any moving object while capturing panoramic image, it will result in an error. But, then you can create beautiful panoramic shots with this if you know how to use it perfectly.

You can also record 720p videos @30fps, the quality of the videos being good for the price range, I wouldn’t recommend anyone to use this camera for recording videos because it loses its focus very frequently during recording. Also, with its CCD sensor, you get pink tint while shooting videos with bright backgrounds.

Here are few videos that we captured during our testing

Battery

The Sony Cybershot DSC W710 Camera has Li-ion rechargeable battery of 680mAh which can take upto 220 still pictures. In my personal use, the battery lasted for around 250 shots (with flash) and 360 shots (without flash). The battery takes around 1 hour to charge fully if charged with the provided charger and around 1hr 30 mins if charged with USB port of the computer.

This camera also comes with USB 2.0 connectivity and an AV connector to watch photos and videos on large screens.

Conclusion

Being an entry level camera, you shouldn’t expect DSLR like camera quality. But, I must say Sony Cybershot DSC W710 camera is better than any other camera at this price point. If you are really tight on budget, you should go with this camera. At the price level of less than $100, this makes a real good choice. You also get 4GB SD card and camera pouch free with the box. You may purchase this product in India from Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal. These are some of the trusted online shopping sites in India.
